A root canal is a treatment used to repair and protect a badly decayed or infected tooth. The nerve and pulp of the tooth can become irritated, inflamed, and infected from deep decay; Repeated dental procedures on teeth; Large fillings, or a crack or chip in the tooth. It can also be caused by trauma to the face. During root canal treatment, the nerve and pulp of the tooth are removed, cleaned, and sealed inside. If left untreated, the tissues surrounding the tooth can become inflamed and form an abscess.
